There is an ancient legend about how the rhinoceros got its tough skin. Long ago, Lord Krishna decided to replace the elephant with the rhinoceros, because the riders were easy targets for enemy archers. The warriors caught a rhinoceros, put tough armor on it and began to teach it. But when the rhino was led to Krishna, he saw that rhino is so capricious that it will never learn to obey orders. Thus he ordered the rhinoceros be freed. The warriors released it into the woods, but forgot to remove the armor. So to this day and rhinos are still wearing tough armor.
In ancient India, several governors have actually used rhinos in combat instead of the tanks. They were trained to use an iron trident was attached to the rhino’s horn.
