Ermak – Ermolay Timofeevich (Vasily Timofeevich Alenin according to other sources), was born near Vologda sometime between 1530-40.
The subjugator of Siberia, he was one of history’s mysterious personalities, while at the same time a favorite of the people. He became a symbol of courage, leadership and willpower.
The sculpture was created in 2007 as a monument sketch. The pedestal is shaped in the form of the boats that Ermak’s detachment used in 1582 to reach Western Siberia for fight against Khan Kuchumom. The horseman stands on a precipice over boundless open spaces. The axe is a symbol of his simple origin and is clamped in the horseman’s imperiously stretched out hand. As N.M.Karamzin wrote, “Ermak was sort of unknown, but he had a great soul”. Warriors sculpture.
